Introduction
Omni Federal is proud to announce the launch of the cutting-edge CNS/ATM (Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management) portal, a significant milestone in our partnership with BESPIN and Hanscom Air Force Base (Mass.). This venture saw the fusion of a user-centric design process (UX) with modern application development and platform capabilities, resulting in a state-of-the-art CNS/ATM portal. As a UX Designer at Omni Federal, I was instrumental in designing wireframes, creating an interactive prototype, and shaping the user experience.
As a UX Designer at Omni Federal, I had the privilege of being an integral part of the CNS/ATM (Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management) modernization initiative in collaboration with BESPIN and Hanscom Air Force Base (Mass.).
This project focused on the rapid design and delivery of a modernized CNS/ATM portal, with my role encompassing the creation of wireframes, a clickable prototype, the establishment and maintenance of a design system, and the crafting of essential design elements.
My Role and Contributions
1. Wireframing and Prototyping
Conceptualization: My journey began with the conceptualization of the CNS/ATM portal's user interface. I sketched wireframes that outlined the initial structure and layout of the dashboard.
Interactive Prototyping: Leveraging industry-standard tools, I transformed static wireframes into an interactive and clickable prototype. This prototype enabled stakeholders to experience the interface's functionality and flow, providing valuable insights for further refinement.
User-Centric Iteration: Throughout the project, I actively engaged in user testing sessions, gathering feedback and iteratively improving the prototype to align with user needs and project objectives.
2. Design System Development and Maintenance
Comprehensive Component Library: I played a key role in developing a comprehensive library of UI components, ensuring consistency and efficiency in the design process. This library included buttons, forms, menus, and other essential elements.
Guidelines and Documentation: I meticulously documented design guidelines, creating a valuable reference point for the project team and future contributors. This documentation promoted adherence to a unified and coherent design language.
Ongoing Maintenance: My responsibilities extended beyond the initial development; I actively maintained and updated the design system to accommodate evolving project requirements, user feedback, and advancements in design best practices.
3. Crafting Design Elements
Visual Identity: I curated a visual identity for the CNS/ATM portal, making decisions on color palettes, typography, and overall visual aesthetics that resonated with the project's objectives.
Custom Iconography: To enhance user understanding and maintain visual consistency, I designed custom icons that harmonized with the project's goals and improved the overall user experience.
Results and Impact
Accelerated Design Validation: The interactive prototype played a pivotal role in streamlining the design validation process, resulting in rapid iterations and an optimized user experience.
Design Consistency: The design elements and guidelines I established contributed to a consistent visual identity across the portal, reinforcing a unified user experience.
Efficient Collaboration: The documented design principles and elements promoted effective collaboration among team members, fostering a shared understanding of design goals.
Conclusion
The successful launch of the CNS/ATM portal stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of our team and the commitment to a user-centric design approach. The project has not only enhanced web presence and operational efficiency but has also provided a robust foundation for future developments. This achievement underscores the growing software factory culture within the USAF and reflects our dedication to creating innovative solutions that truly make a difference.
